Oldschool drag

These were the days in Japan! I took these pictures circa 1997 (excuse the crappy quality!), very late at night on a stretch of deserted road close to Ajigaura in Ibaraki-ken. Back then it was all about drag racing and young people would regularly meet on Friday and Saturday night for some zero-yon fun! The BNR32 with its awesome traction was king, beating JZA80’s and Z32’s off the line with incredible ease. I remember there was a local shop that would show up with their drag-spec GTR (easily a 9-sec car) and shock people. Back then I had never seen anything accelerate so fast in my life.  Too bad I don’t have any pictures of it!

While this was going on, further up the road other kids would be drifting up and down a tiny touge road with their beaten up drift-mobiles!  They were far from good, and often ended up smashing into the guardrail.  Most would leave without bumpers!
